PTE Writing Format: Score And Exercises Explained

PTE writing is the second section of the first part of the PTE Exam and contains 2 types of exercises. It will take you around 35 minutes to complete. This part of the test will assess your PTE writing and reading skills. At the exam, you will have to answer to 3-5 questions for the writing module.

I will briefly go over the two tasks of the PTE writing section to give you an introduction and the essential things to take into consideration when you practice or pass the PTE writing section. Here is the list of exercises ordered, as it will appear in the exam writing format.

  • Summarize Written Text
  • Essay

The 2 PTE Writing Exercises

1) Summarize Written Text

This first task will judge your PTE writing and reading abilities.

  • You'll see a text prompt that contains up to 300 words.
  • You have 10 minutes to write a summary. Make sure to write no more than 75 words in one sentence only.
  • You'll find 2 to 3 of them per exam.
  • Spend no more than 10 minutes on each of them.
  • This task is very important. Make sure you practice many of them during your PTE writing preparation.

Scoring for PTE Summarize Text

You will be scored a maximum of:

  • 2 points for content,

  • 1 point for formal requirements,

  • 2 points for grammar,

  • 2 points for vocabulary


2) Essay

This second task will judge your PTE writing ability.

  • You'll see a text prompt that contains 2-3 sentences. You have to write an essay about it in maximum 20 minutes.
  • Make sure to write between 200 and 300 words.
  • You'll find 1 per exam.
  • Spend no more than 20 minutes on this task.
  • This task is important and considered very difficult by students. Make sure you follow writing tips and templates during your PTE writing preparation.

You will be scored a maximum of:

  • 3 points for content,

  • 2 points for formal requirements,

  • 2 points for grammar,

  • 2 points for general linguistic range,

  • 2 points for vocabulary.

  • 2 points for no spelling mistakes.
