Do you have questions about PTE Australia immigration?

The Australian government uses the Pearson Test for English (PTE) and the International English Language Test System (IELTS) to test the English proficiency of people wanting to move to Australia.

You have many visa options to choose from in Australia for permanent residence.

Many visas have different requirements, so it is important to determine which English test will benefit you the most in Australia. Below you'll find answers to your questions.

PTE Australia question #1: What is the difference between the PTE and IELTS?

Both tests examine a person's ability to fit into Australian society. Australia has recognized the PTE test as an alternative to the standard IELTS.

These tests use different methods to come to their conclusions. PTE is a computer-based test conducted in a room full of other applicants, in which you interface with a computer screen during the speaking section of the test, and yes it can be distracting to hear other people speaking during your test.

In contrast, the speaking part of the IELTS is done in a private room. You communicate with an actual person. Depending on your personality, one test may appeal to you more than another.

The PTE score can be used to apply to an unlimited number of institutions (including universities, colleges, and Australian visas).

Another thing to consider is that the PTE test can be taken 365 days a year, while the IELTS test can only be written during specific session dates throughout the year.

In addition, it only takes up to 5 workdays to get results back on the PTE test. The IELTS results take approximately 5-13 days.

PTE Australia question #2: Is one test easier than the other?

Some people think that PTE is the easier of the two tests; however, other people prefer IELTS. Both tests are equally difficult to pass. People with different learning styles prefer different tests.

PTE Australia question #3: How high do your PTE scores have to be to immigrate to Australia?

To be granted an Australian visa, you need to obtain a minimum score on your PTE. The minimum score is set differently depending on which Australian visa you select.

There are many permanent resident visa options available in Australia.

Family-stream visas do not require you to take the PTE to immigrate to Australia. Work visas, in contrast, require a candidate to undergo an English proficiency test.

There are three visas under the Invited Pathways umbrella that require a minimum PTE Academic score of 50 for each of the 4 test sections. These include:

  • visa 189,
  • visa 190,
  • visa 489.

Australian Online PTE Preparation

Some Australian immigration visas use a point system.

To gain 10 points, you need to score a 65 on all 4 parts of the test. To gain 20 points, you need to score a 79 on all 4 parts of the test.

To get the best score on your English test in Australia, you should familiarize yourself with the test format and the possible questions you will be asked.

Preparation is key to receiving a good score on the exam. Even native English speakers will benefit from looking at sample tests.
